The Heart of Iowa Habitat for Humanity organization -- which serves Boone, Greene and Guthrie Counties -- is sponsoring the first-ever "Heart of Iowa HabiTour" fundraising bicycle ride on the Raccoon River Valley Trail on Saturday, Aug. 26. The ride will begin and end in Jefferson, with participants able to choose routes of 30, 50 or 100 miles -- all on the trail. Starting times are 6-to-7 a.m. for century riders, 9-to-10 a.m. for 50-mile riders, and 10-to-11 a.m. for 30-mile riders, planned that way so that all riders will arrive back in Jefferson about the same time. There will be a continental breakfast to start the event and three designated rest-stops with food and services. There will also be a post-ride celebration at Doc's Stadium Bar & Grill on the square in Jefferson. Riders on the HabiTour are required to raise a minimum of $100 in sponsorships on behalf of Habitat for Humanity to participate -- or donate that amount. These dollars will be used by volunteers across the three counties to assist low-income families attain opportunities for safe, decent and affordable housing. One new home is under construction in Madrid this summer, while ten additional critical home repair projects are scheduled or under way in communities across Greene and Guthrie Counties. Fridays & Saturdays
The Hotel Pattee, which the Raccoon River Valley Trail goes right in front of in the town of Perry, presents live music most Friday and Saturday evenings from 7 to 10 p.m. (The occasional Thursday, too.) The shows are outdoors in Soumas Court if the weather is good, or inside the hotel if it's not. As you've probably heard, trail users are the No. 1 marketing target of Hotel Pattee owners Jay and Denise Hartz, so pedal on in for the music, and also for great dining, desserts and overnight accommodations. You can monitor the musical line-up right here: http://www.hotelpattee.com/music--events.html
