The Heart of Iowa Habitat for Humanity organization -- which serves Boone, Greene and Guthrie Counties -- is sponsoring the first-ever "Heart of Iowa HabiTour" fundraising bicycle ride on the Raccoon River Valley Trail on Saturday, Aug. 26. The ride will begin and end in Jefferson, with participants able to choose routes of 30, 50 or 100 miles -- all on the trail. There's a big post-ride barbeque and party at the Greene County Fairgrounds that's open to all participants and also to the public with great food, live music,, domestic and craft beers and other refreshments. Riders on the HabiTour are required to raise a minimum of $150 in sponsorships on behalf of Habitat for Humanity to participate. These dollars will be used by volunteers across the three counties to assist low-income families attain opportunities for safe, decent and affordable housing. One new home is under construction in Madrid this summer, while ten additional critical home repair projects are scheduled or under way in communities across Greene and Guthrie Counties. The Hotel Pattee, which the Raccoon River Valley Trail goes right in front of in the town of Perry, presents live music most Friday and Saturday evenings from 7 to 10 p.m. (The occasional Thursday, too.) The shows are outdoors in Soumas Court if the weather is good, or inside the hotel if it's not.
