A new bicycle club has formed along the Raccoon River Valley Trail – the “Cyclists Of Greene” in Jefferson and Greene County. Fourteen club members went on the first group ride Thursday evening, April 8, riding about eight miles on the streets of Jefferson, “kind of a parade around town to remind local people that we’re going to be doing these rides now,” said Chuck Offenburger. They plan rides at 6 p.m. every Thursday evening, and 10 a.m. every Saturday morning, weather permitting, starting from the Jefferson trailhead of the RRVT. After the Thursday rides, the group will gather at a different local restaurant each week. All the weekly rides are open to the public and are free. Those who show up will decide what direction and how far they want to ride, and may divide into different groups, but no one will be left to ride alone. Most of the rides will at least start out on the RRVT. The club is also sponsoring a bicycle safety rodeo for children on Saturday, May 15, and a ride around Greene County on Saturday, July 17, a week before RAGBRAI. That July 17 ride, which will start and finish in the midst of the Greene County Fair, will have routes of varied distance, including one of 100 miles. The club is being led during its organizational stages by Jefferson Mayor Craig Berry, who is an avid cyclist.
