4Hers-On-Trail
Members of the Greene County 4-H Young Leaders program spent two hours Sunday afternoon, April 18, picking up trash along the four miles of the Raccoon River Valley Trail between the Jefferson Depot and Winkleman Switch. Shown here, just north of the North Raccoon River are (left to right) Andrew Schnebly, Kyle Peterson, Curtis Sandage, Stephanie Thompson, Kelly Reed, Emily Rumley, Erin Fray, Kirsten Shockey and Brandon Tilley. Another member of the group, Snowy Chargo, was working farther away on the trail at picture-taking time. Working with the Young Leaders were their adult co-leaders Jen Badger and Bill Doubler. The Young Leaders program, Badger explained, is “a group of high school age 4-Hers from the various clubs within the Greene County 4-H program. The group generally meets once a month to work on leadership skill-building activities. They act as the youth leaders of the 4-H program. The group also plans and carries out service projects throughout the year. This year they have chosen to do the rec trail clean-up, play Bingo with the residents of the Long Term Care unit at Greene County Medical Center, host a food drive for Greene County Christian Action Resource Center during the county fair, and may carry out an improvement project on the Greene County Fairgrounds. We also do one or two ‘fun day’ events throughout the year. Recently, we went to Perfect Games in Ames for bowling and laser tag.” To understand the quick impact of their RRVT clean-up, if you take 10 4-Hers and two adult leaders all working two hours, that’s 24 worker hours in a short time. And to appreciate their effort even more, you should know that a bunch of them had been out very late Saturday night attending the Jefferson-Scranton High School prom and after-prom party! After their clean-up Sunday afternoon, they all gathered at the Jefferson Depot and grilled pork loin sandwiches. (Photo contributed by Jen Badger)
