It’s picnic time! Raccoon River Valley Trail Association’s second annual membership picnic is set midday Saturday, July 11, at Hanging Rock Park in Redfield. Bicycle in, or drive in, and join the fun. It’s free to members, with a bargain price for non-members, who are welcome, too!
REDFIELD, Iowa, July 5, 2009 – All trail enthusiasts are invited to the second annual Raccoon River Valley Trail Association membership picnic, set for Saturday, July 11, with serving from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at beautiful Hanging Rock Park on the southwest corner of this town located on the RRVT.
Food and soft drinks are free to association members. Other cyclists and trail supporters are welcome to attend, too, with a meal charge of $4 per person. Of course, the basic $20 RRVT Association memberships can be purchased at the picnic, and people who join then also eat free.
The menu is hamburgers and brats grilled at the park, beans, chips, cookies and soft drinks.
Several members of the RRVT Association board of directors will be on hand to serve as hosts, as well as to visit with the guests and listen to ideas and suggestions for the trail.
Hanging Rock Park, one of the parks operated by the Dallas County Conservation Board, can be reached by car in southwestern Redfield, and for those arriving by bicycle, the park can be reached by a short spur trail off the RRVT, with the trails’ intersection marked in Redfield. The lower part of the park is right alongside the Middle Raccoon River, and the west riverbank there is made up of huge rock outcroppings of sandstone, 40 to 50 feet high, the “hanging rocks.” A road/trail boulevard in the park curves up a hillside between fields of wildflowers, to the shelterhouse area, and that’s where the actual picnic will be held.
The picnic is scheduled on a weekend just before RAGBRAI, when many cyclists are using the RRVT for training rides.
