PANORA, Iowa, August 1, 2007 – The pouring of the new concrete surface on five miles of the Raccoon River Valley Trail between Linden and Panora was completed July 27, but some minor cracking in the new surface will be repaired before that section of trail can be officially re-opened.
“We’re going to do it right,” said Joe Hanner, director of the Guthrie County Conservation Board, which owns and operates the RRVT in that county. “No short-cuts.”
Hanner said the small cracks developed along some of the cuts that the contractor’s crew made every eight feet in the long stretch of new concrete. That caused some concrete to flake off. He said he anticipates those sections of concrete will be replaced.
Installation of new gravel on both shoulders of the trail by the contractor was expected to be completed by today, August 1. The other work remaining to be done, by Hanner’s staff, is re-installation of signage and benches along the trail.
“We had hoped to be re-opening the trail by this weekend of August 4-5,” Hanner said, “but now we have to delay that until we get the cracks in the concrete all repaired.”
Details of the resurfacing project can be found in an earlier story in the RRVT News section of this Internet site.
